First impressions count, and the first impression that any visitor is going to have of your home is your front door. Even if you’re not looking to sell your home, kerb appeal is very important and there are many things that need considering before you go ahead and choose a new front door.

Material

It’s true that doors come in all different shapes and sizes, but they also come in different materials.

Wood is the most popular choice of front door for aesthetic purposes, and there are is a wide variety of woods to choose from that can take any stain or paint colour desired. If you’d like to install a wood front door to your home, be aware that you may want to install added protection like a canopy to keep the door at its best for longer. Doors can also tend to expand depending on the season (seriously!), so make sure to take the climate of your area into account too.

Steel doors account for about half the doors on the market, as they are fairly inexpensive, offer little maintenance and are also energy efficient.

Glass Reinforced Polyester (GRP) doors are available within our Visage range, and are compression moulded to give a high definition panel design which offers authentic timber appearance. The thermosetting manufacturing process means that they are unaffected by variations in temperature.

Design & Colour

When choosing the design of your home, it’s important you talk to quality door specialists like ourselves here at Wilmslow Glass to ensure you’re making the right decision. As much as you may have a dream design in mind, you must make sure that it keeps with the age of the property as well as the house’s façade. You want to choose something that will compliment your home.

The colour of your front door is the fun part. Once you’ve decided on the right style and material, this is where you can switch-up the appearance. Again, the tone you choose must compliment your home so think about how it will look next to the façade of your home. Pastel colours will look odd in a traditional home, whereas newer build houses may not suit the typical white door.

Security

Feeling secure in your home is incredibly important, and ease of mind comes with the security of your front door. Thicker doors with a solid core are what you want, and our GRP doors have high impact-resistant GRP skins that are 44mm thick for increased security. Replace any front door that is hollow with a solid core door. You can check which door you have by just knocking on the door as hollow doors will echo.

Extra Features

As well as the actual frame of the door itself, you’ll want to consider whether you will be having a letterbox or an external post-box, a door knocker or a handle on the door, as all these features will ultimately affect the final look of your door.

Like we say above, the best thing to do is get in touch with us or visit our showroom. Our friendly team will be on hand to give you all the expert advice you need.
